Introduction to TNPSC Exams : Cracking The Code
The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) conducts a range of
competitive examinations to recruit candidates for various government jobs in the state
of Tamil Nadu. TNPSC exams are known for their rigorous evaluation, and they are
heavily sought after.
More than 18 lakh applications just for Group-IV exam, while the number of applications
does go down, the higher the job position. There is no need to worry though with the
right strategy, your time and effort, and some guidance you can pass with flying colors.
We will start with differentiating group exams, qualification, syllabus, preparation
strategy, mock interviews and tests.
TNPSC Exam Categories
There are a wide array of jobs available and they are categorized based on the
services they provide and qualifications required to meet them. We will be discussing
them below.
Group I Services:
These exams recruit for roles including Deputy Collector,Deputy Superintendent of
Police (Category-1),Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes).Deputy Registrar of
Co-operative Societies ,Assistant Director of Rural Development,District Employment
Officer.
Basic qualification for the candidate would be a degree from any university or institution
recognized by the University Grants Commission in their respective field.

Group II Services – Interview and non-interview posts:
These exams recruit roles for Municipal Commissioner(Grade-II),Assistant Section
Officer in Secretariat (law, finance, other than law and finance, TNPSC),Revenue
Assistant in Revenue Department,Assistant Inspector of Labour,Sub Registrar(Grade-II)
the list goes on including both interview and non interview post.

Group IV Services and VAO exams:
These exams recruit for roles like Junior Assistant, Bill Collector, Typist, Stenographer
and Field Surveyor and so on. There is a Mandatory Tamil Eligibility test after the recent

Basic educational qualifications for most of the posts is candidates must have cleared
the S.S.L.C State examination or its equivalent from a Higher Secondary School.
However, for the recruitment to the post of Typist and Steno-Typist, a candidate must
have passed the Government Technical Examination for Typewriting.
Knowledge in Tamil: Applicants should possess adequate knowledge in Tamil for the
Group 4 posts.
