A bone marrow transplant is a medical procedure that is used to replace bone marrow that has been damaged or destroyed as a result of infections, disease, or a side effect of treatment. Allogeneic transplant is used when the bone marrow is damaged due to disease, whereas autologous transplant is used when the bone marrow is intact at the start of the disease but becomes damaged due to therapy. The WMDA Search & Match Service is now the world’s largest hematopoietic cell database, with over 38 million stem cell donors and over 800,000 cord blood units listed. Participants in the WMDA include 75 hematopoietic cell donor registries from 53 countries, as well as 53 cord blood banks from 36 countries. More information on the number of Donors/Cord Blood Units (CBU) per registry can be found in the WMDA database.
