Staple fibers are the foundation for textured yarns (more information), which are widely used in both industrial and clothing applications. Staple fibers must be spun or twisted together to form a long continuous strand of yarn, and there are numerous methods for combining yarns to create a fabric, depending on the end product: weaving, knitting, or nonwoven fabric production. A fabric’s characteristics can be manipulated using blending, fiber manipulation, and other methods to achieve the desired fineness, strength, elasticity, and structure. They can also be compressed into non-woven fabrics and used in a variety of applications such as automobiles, construction, furniture, sanitary materials, and agriculture. The most common raw materials used in the production of staple fiber are wool and cotton. It is, however, made from a variety of other raw materials, including alpaca, angora, mohair, and flax. Filament fibers are typically cut into shorter lengths for spinning, either with a specific fiber or a variety of natural fiber combinations that are also classified as staple fibers.
